"Hi Albie & Cheryl -
About ten years ago I built one of your brick heaters even though
I had never laid a brick in my life. I was able to do it thanks
to your encouragement and advice - the final product was both
beautiful and truly the 'heart of our home'. Unfortunately, two
years after it was completed we moved to Colorado and life has
never been the same. We moved back to the D.C. area five years
ago and whenever I pass my old house I feel that I have lost something
very warm and dear.
Yesterday the owner of the house contacted me and invited me over.
After all these years I got to see my baby again and it was just
as grand and beautiful as when we left. The new owners have also
found that the heater is the heart of their home which tempered
my sadness at having given up something that I had enjoyed so
much. As I ran my hand over the soapstone keystone I remembered
the times that Albie would call me from wherever he was working,
including North Dakota, to answer my questions and the times that
Cheryl would keep encouraging me that I could see the project
through. You two don't have a business - you have a way of life
and I will always feel indebted to you for having shared it with
me.
It appears from your website that the intervening years have treated
you well and I hope that the future brings you as much warmth
as you have given so many others.
Sincerely, Bob de Sugny"
"Dear Albie,
In the middle of 1999 I have built a finnish style wood stove following
your handbook and the kind guidance you gave by phone and e-mail.
The house took a little longer to complete. We have finally moved
in last November.
The wonderfull stove is our only heat source in the 2000 sq ft house.
We have no problems maintaining +72F in the areas close to the wood
stove and a little less in the more remote bedrooms. The bake oven
and the water jacket provide valuable service as well.
I thank my lucky star for the inspiration your literature gave me
and all the other help you provided. It is particularly much appreciated
in this period of rising petroleum and natural gas prices.
Best regards and many thanks again."

"....We wanted to let you know how well the fireplace
is working. We lost our power on Thursday at 2pm [January 11th,
1998] and we have been toasty warm ever since. We have been able
to keep the downstairs temperature at 65 degrees or higher and the
upstairs at 60 degrees or so. We haven't had to sleep downstairs
yet. The real test will come tonight when the temp really drops.
We are so glad we have this woodstove. It looks great and works
great!"

"It's Tuesday, January 13, snowy and grey.
I am snuggled next to my very favorite Russian, as is our winter
fattened cat, Little Fox. This Russian speaks in tongues which
I thoroughly understand and appreciate--tongues of flame-producing
coals which have made all the difference during this ice induced
outage. I have to say my feeling about electricity is a love/spurn
variety. The outage benefits are great in freeing one from habit.
Quiet,
conversation, contemplation, in place of the e-mail, T.V., radio
that others here are addicted to, are giving me a much needed
creative input of power--so, my "out-age" is yin-yang. It's really
an "in-age." What a complicated route to simplicity. Anyway, I
am momentarily content. Studying your brickwork, I am seeing a
clean-out flower. Seems like a lot of fun could be had with brick
placement . . . or does one have to stay within strict rules for
stability, etc.? My best wishes, warm thoughts to you and yours,
Albie."
